    The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) recently updated some of the recommendations for treating patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Two large conceptual changes occurred in this update: one is an increased emphasis on treating exacerbations, and the other is looking at decreasing mortality as an important treatment goal.
